The North Face backpacks

The North Face began in 1966 as a climbing equipment retail store in San Francisco, founded by Douglas Tompkins and his wife, Susie Tompkins. It was acquired two years later by Kenneth “Hap” Klopp. The North Face takes its company logo from a stylised drawing of Half Dome, in Yosemite National Park.

During the 1960s, the young company rallied more and more enthusiasts of the great outdoors and began to finance expeditions to some of the most remote regions of the globe. It is the beginning of a rich tradition, today rooted in the philosophy of the company and faithfully expressed by the motto of The North Face: Never Stop Exploring ™, “Never stop exploring”.

At the end of 1980s decade, The North Face was the only American company to market a full range of specialized outdoor and ski clothing, backpacks, tents and sleeping bags.

By 1997, purchasers of North Face attire had expanded beyond those looking for technical clothing for skiing, climbing, and other outdoor pursuits to rappers in New York City, but remained only a small part of the company’s business.

Today, more than 50 years after its modest beginnings, The North Face offers an incomparable diversity of high performance clothing, shoes, backpacks, and equipment. We push the limits of innovation so you can push the limits of exploration. We are incredibly proud of the trust shown by the greatest climbers, mountaineers, skiers, snowboarders, endurance runners and other explorers on the planet.
